Artist Harpignies, Henri-Joseph (French painter and printmaker, 1819-1916)
Date 188[?]6 (dated)
Signed yes
Description Though he treated other subjects, Henri-Joseph Harpignies was primarily a landscape painter. He achieved considerable renown for his work, winning medals at several Salons. The location depicted here, with a track meandering though a low valley, remains to be discovered, although it is likely to be in France. Harpignies travelled widely, but he is mainly associated with landscapes of central France, particularly the Loire valley. The grey-green palette, the luminosity, and the soft but dynamic handling are typical of Harpignies' work, and the enduring influence of Corot and the Barbizon School on him are evident.
