In this painting the artist has made an intimate observation of an elderly lace-worker. The figure is shown bust-length against a dark background. Javolleur has used thick brush-strokes to bring a descriptive quality to the figure. The subject reflects the interest in local subject matter that was growing in the arts at the end of the nineteenth century. |
