Description Jan Porcellis's subtle use of colour and naturalistic depiction of atmospheric effects influenced a new generation of Dutch marine artists in the early seventeenth century. This work demonstrates the dramatic potential of his technique. As well as capturing the dynamic movement of the waves and the brooding nature of the storm, the detail provides a narrative of human calamity. On one ship the crew struggles to man the decks while nearby a man clings to the mast of his sinking vessel. The expressive gestures of the figures on the shore reveal their anguish as they watch the troubled boats.
