Collection Mount Edgcumbe House
Artist Velde, Willem van de, II (Dutch painter, 1633-1707)
Date Earliest probably about 1670
Date Latest possibly about 1685
Description Willem van de Velde the younger came to England from Amsterdam in 1670. He was one of Sir Richard Edgcumbe's favoured artists and there were several of his paintings in the Mount Edgcumbe collection. This one demonstrates well Van de Velde's talent for combining detail and accuracy with artistic sensitivity and expression. His technical knowledge regarding boats is evident in his treatment of the rigging, positioning of the sails and the activity of the crew. The scene is conceived in its entirety, however, and the artist's ability is equally visible in the balance of the composition and atmospheric effect.
