| Description |
This painting was clearly influenced by the subjects and style of Adriaen van de Velde who was active in the mid seventeenth century. Whereas his brother and father were both renowned marine painters, Adriaen was more prolific in painting landscapes animated with peasants, herdsmen and animals. Although this painting does not show the quality of Van de Velde's draughtsmanship it demonstrates his role in the reception of Italianate imagery into northern European art. Van de Velde never went to Italy but incorporated the imagery of artists who had, such as Karel Dujardin, into his own works, only to be copied himself. |
