| Description |
Gerard Van Edema painted Mount Edgcumbe Estate several times, usually incorporating marine views of the adjacent River Tamar. In the upper half of this composition Mount Edgcumbe House dominates the hillside and the village of Cremyll on the shore. Meanwhile, the estuary below provides an intriguing hive of marine activity. Among the variety of boats, many appear filled with figures and are heading toward the village. A crowd of people is gathered on the beach where a gilt-edged coach has arrived. Edema demonstrates at once the strategic position of the estate and the social standing of the Mount Edgcumbe family. |

| Notes |
Probably the companion piece to A View of Mount Edgcumbe from the Tamar (Plymm.036). They are the same size, were painted around the same date and both feature the same horses and carriage. Maker Church is visible on the horizon. Recorded in 1961 inventory of paintings at Mount Edgcumbe: (Kitchen Passage) 's.wall - Mount Edgcumbe and Cremyll from East bank of Tamar. / Gerard Edema (1685) / Figures by Th. Wyck / ships by Wm. van de Velde / (end near Pantry)' Willem van de Velde was another of Sir Richard Edgcumbe's favourite artists; however, it is improbable that he and Edema collaborated on this painting. |
