Title Madonna and Child in a Landscape
Collection Mount Edgcumbe House
Artist Manner of Italian School
Date Earliest possibly about 1800
Date Latest possibly about 1850
Description This small Virgin and Child is probably a copy after an Italian master. Its size and rather cursory technique indicate that it may have been a portable souvenir piece, painted for or by a foreign visitor completing the popular Grand Tour. The authorship can be partially explained by an old inventory of the collection, which notes that the painting was 'copied by the Hon. F. MacDonald'. The Mount Edgcumbe and MacDonald families were connected through the marriage of Caroline Anne Edgcumbe to George MacDonald of Clanranald in 1812.
