| Description |
The subject of herdsmen and their animals crossing a ford is a frequent motif in Berchem's work (e.g Herd of Cattle Crossing a Ford, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). A woman wearing a yellow dress is seated on a donkey led by the herdsman towards the shallow stream, which borders the foreground. She looks towards another woman dressed in red wading through the pool of water. The Italianate light and the idealised peasant types are typical of Berchem's work, which was widely imitated during his lifetime and thereafter. The sketchy quality of this painting suggests that this is the work of a follower. |
