Description This half-length portrait depicts Sir Thomas Kennedy, 9th Earl of Cassillis (1733-1775). He stands at a table, with his left hand resting on the marble surface. Thomas Kennedy went on an extended Grand Tour to Italy and probably sat for his portrait to Batoni when passing through Rome. Judging from a receipt, the painting was completed by September 1764.

Notes Until 1963 the painting bore an inscription in the upper right corner, which described the sitter as 'David 10th Earl of Cassillis succ. 1775 died 1792', the brother of Thomas Kennedy. This inscription was probably added to the portrait in the nineteenth century. It was removed in 1963.

The original receipt for the painting states that the portrait of the 'Earl of Cassillis' was painted by Batoni in September 1764
