Artist Attributed to Miereveld, Michiel Jansz. van (Dutch painter, 1567-1641)
Previously attributed to Dutch School
Date 1616 (dated)
Description Miereveld was a Dutch artist from Delft. Little of his early work survives. He began by painting history paintings but concentrated on portraiture from 1590. Miereveld was extremely prolific and presided over a large workshop. He was the most popular portrait painter in his home town of Delft but it is a measure of his popularity that he also received commissions from foreign visitors. Miereveld was appointed official painter to the Stadholder court of Mauritz, the Prince of Orange Nassau in 1607. This portrait is typical of his oeuvre in that the sitter is depicted half-length at a slight angle to the viewer against a monochrome background.
