Title A Landscape with Figures and a Mill
Collection National Trust for Scotland (Leith Hall)
Artist Attributed to circle of Zuccarelli, Franco (Italian painter, 1702-1788)
Date Earliest possibly about 1750
Date Latest possibly about 1770
Description This imaginary landscape relates to the easy bucolic compositions by Francesco Zuccarelli. The elevated foreground on the right is occupied with a group of figures and animals relaxing on the grassy ground edging a small stream. A shepherd talks to a young woman, dogs play, a woman and a child lie on the ground in the shadow of a tree, and two cows rest nearby. On the left, a calm river bends towards a mill in the middle-ground. A townscape is suggested in the far distance. Zuccarelli's success stemmed chiefly from such Arcadian landscapes.
