| Description |
John Ross of Arnage (1665-1714) was the Provost of Aberdeen between 1710 and 1712. He is depicted at half-length, his body turned to the right and head toward the viewer. The luxuriant dark hair falling onto his shoulders, the sumptuous purple mantle and the direct gaze lend the sitter an air of nobility and stature. This portrait is typical of Sir John de Medina, a painter of Spanish-Flemish origin, who settled in Scotland in about 1693 and became the principal portrait-painter of the Scottish nobility. He was knighted in 1707. |
