Portrait of Sir James Dalrymple of Stair, President of the Court of Session, created 1st Viscount Stair. The Dalrymples were a family of lawyers and politicians. Sir James was author of Institutions of Scottish Law (1681). He served as the King's ambassador to France at the court of Louis XIV and was a prominent judge. He is shown in ermine-trimmed crimson robes and lace cravat. |
