Description Portrait of Sir James Dalrymple of Stair, President of the Court of Session, created 1st Viscount Stair. The Dalrymples were a family of lawyers and politicians. Sir James was author of Institutions of Scottish Law (1681). He served as the King's ambassador to France at the court of Louis XIV and was a prominent judge. He is shown in ermine-trimmed crimson robes and lace cravat.

Notes Newhailes Papers, National Library of Scotland, MS 25818 f. 104: 'Edinburgh the 30th November 1696 Received from Mr David Dalrymple the sum of £14 Stirling money, it being the full payment of two pictures, one frame and the mending of the little picture in miniature for the Master of Stair, by me J. Medina'. The painting was engraved by Howison.
