Artist Degas, Edgar (French painter and sculptor, 1834-1917)
Date 1898
Signed yes
Description This scene of cattle returning from the fields was painted by Edgar Degas in 1898. One of the best-known Impressionists, Degas is particularly remembered for his paintings of Parisian life - the races, street life and the ballet. The subject of this painting is unusual in Degas's oeuvre. It was painted when the artist stayed on a farm belonging to his friend Braquaval at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. Then in his sixties, Degas had suffered eyesight problems for years, which was one of the factors which influenced the free handling so evident here. The muted colours reflect the influence of Paul Gauguin whose works Degas collected.
