| Description |
This painting of Christ calling his first disciples is by the little-known Austrian artist Adam Brenner. Christ is shown in the centre of the composition with the two sets of brothers, Simon Peter and Andrew, James and John. All were fishermen and Brenner shows them on the shore with their nets. The artist's name and the date are inscribed in the sand. Brenner trained at the Academy in Vienna and he remained a life-long adherent of academic values. He generally painted historical subjects in a detailed style which owed much to the German Nazarene Brotherhood. |
