| Description |
This dark painting shows a landscape with a woody foreground, in which is seen a group of travellers. Beyond, contrasting with the dark foreground, is a lighter desolate plateau, and further back the view is closed by the sharp forms of a range of mountains covered in snow. The painter has placed the horizon line quite low in the painting, in order to give prominence to a cloudy sky in the background and a dramatically wind-swept tree in the foreground. Through the use of colour, the artist created an illusion of depth and gelid air. |

| Notes |
Magnasco was influenced by the landscape paintings of Salvatore Rosa, and experimented with the more violent and dramatic aspects, which would make his pictures much to the taste of the Romantics. |
