Date Earliest possibly about 1856
Date Latest possibly about 1907
Signed yes
Description Waterfront buildings recede diagonally from the left foreground to the right. The low vantage point and diminutive figures set off the water-surface and riverbank in the foreground, whilst strengthening the monumentality of the mill, which dominates the buildings. A windmill rising against the scudding sky has some detail picked out, but a church tower and another mill further away appear only as silhouettes. Subject and broad brushwork reveal the influence of the Hague School, who found their motifs in Dutch seventeenth-century painting and painted in a style that suggested atmosphere and mood rather than topographical accuracy.
