| Description |
Waterfront buildings recede diagonally from the left foreground to the right. The low vantage point and diminutive figures set off the water-surface and riverbank in the foreground, whilst strengthening the monumentality of the mill, which dominates the buildings. A windmill rising against the scudding sky has some detail picked out, but a church tower and another mill further away appear only as silhouettes. Subject and broad brushwork reveal the influence of the Hague School, who found their motifs in Dutch seventeenth-century painting and painted in a style that suggested atmosphere and mood rather than topographical accuracy. |
