Notes This work is in a painted oval. The painting is recorded in the 1864 catalogue of the RCS as having been presented by Dr W. C. Hunt of Dartmouth. However, Munk, records in The Roll of the Royal College of Physicians of London, London, 1878, vol. 3, p. 393 that it was presented by Mr Bayford in 1832. The 1900 catalogue also notes that it was presented in 1840 [sic?] by Mr Bayford. It is therefore believed that there were two paintings of this sitter presented to the college but one is believed to have been lost by 1864, the date of the first catalogue. See Wolstenholme, p. 72. The Annal of the Royal College of Physicians of London records that on 22 December 1832, 'The following list was read of Presents made to the college. A Portrait of Sydenham, do Boerhaave by Mr Bayford', p. 278. A letter dated 20 June 1864 from Henry Hunt, 18 Brook Street, London (?), and written at the time of the writing of the 1864 catalogue records that the painting was given by W. C. Hunt, father of Henry Hunt to the RCP through Henry Halford. Both possible provenances listed.
