| Description |
The painting depicts a woodland scene with cattle and figures. Barend Cornelis Koekkoek was born in Middelburg into a family of painters. He studied fine art with his father, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, a marine painter, and later attended the Amsterdam Academy. He travelled round Germany and Belgium where he found inspiration for his landscapes. In 1841, in the German town of Kleve, he founded his own art academy. Koekkoek was a successful painter who became quite famous during his lifetime. He attempted to imitate nature as closely as possible. However, his paintings are not realistic depictions of nature. He took the scenery he saw around him and deliberately idealised it. His detailed landscapes are characteristic examples of Dutch Romantic art. |
