| Description |
The work portrays a fishing community, with the sea on the left and on the right the beach with fisher-folk, ships and a few houses beneath an expansive sky taking up two thirds of the surface. Masts rising diagonally into the grey sky dominate the picture, dwarfing figures and horses. Objects clustered in the right foreground show interest in still-life and create depth, whilst red flags of ships on the horizon draw the eye into the distance. The subject is typical of Weber, a German-born acdemic painter working in Paris from 1856. |
