Description Though born close to Florence, Zuccarelli very probably gained his artistic training in Rome, paying particular attention to the work of Claude Lorrain, Locatelli and Panini. He arrived in Venice around 1730 and gained immediate success as a landscapist and painter of figures. His chief patron was Consul Smith, who was to own 36 paintings by the artist. Many of these works were sold to George III of England. He was persuaded by Smith to travel to England and there he became extremely successful becoming one of the founder members of the Royal Academy. In this particular painting several figures are depicted in the foreground digging and carrying barrels along the path, which leads down to the port. This was a common subject matter for Zuccarelli, who favoured images of peasants fishing or working the land. He also painted religious subjects but the landscape is usually the dominant factor of his compositions.
