| Description |
A surgeon is extracting a tooth in a room of a blacksmith. Dentists, like doctors, were often seen as quacks and tooth pulling was often a fairground attraction. This follows the popular seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish tradition of scenes from everyday life in which the profession of medicine and dentistry was often lampooned. The work may be after the Flemish seventeenth-century artist, David Teniers I who is known for his scenes of this subject. |
