An old label has been removed from the reverse of the painting. This records the name 'Capt. Saint', an agent of Wellcome's.

The artist is also known as Gianbattista Cignaroli & Giovannibettino Cignaroli. The original is in the Academia in Venice but another version was for sale with the Galleria Quaglino in 1956 when it was advertised in Arte Figurativa, vol. 5, 1956. No measurements were given for this work in Galleria Quaglino. The painting at the Wellcome Library is unlikely to be by the artist as the faces are very different in stylisation etc. There is a black thin frame painted around the painting on the edge of the canvas.
