Artist Voss, J. (unknown school, active late 19th century)
Date Earliest probably about 1880

Description 'Conrad of Swabico, a boy of 17 and the last of his line was shamefully beheaded by order of Charles of Aragon. His mother obtained a reprieve but arrived too late to save him. Beheaded 29th October 1268' (Hallam's Medieval History). Figures in medieval dress on a makeshift execution platform covered in red drapery. Conrad in the centre, a very young fair haired man about to be executed. He wears a medieval tunic decorated with three lions. He holds one glove in the air, another is at his feet. A dark, moustached man to the right in a blue tunic places his head and hand on Conrad's shoulder. Conrad grips his other hand with his left hand. Behind Conrad to the left, a priest reads from the bible. An executioner to the right holds an axe next to a chopping block. To the left of the composition, a man wearing dark clothes and head-dress holds an open scroll with broken seal in his hand. The scroll reads: 'Conrad Dux Swab/Cap Dam Anno Domo 1268'. In the right hand background, a volcano is erupting. Late nineteenth century date suggested by the chalky finish and figure types.
