| Description |
Carved pale cream ivory rectangular casket with lock, containing several needlework items and ivory and mother-of-pearl implements.
The four sides and lid are carved in high relief with intricate scenes showing numerous figures and buildings in landscapes. The scene on the top of the lid is surrounded by a border of carved circles. The casket lid is hinged and the four side panels are carved in high relief with flowers, fruit and birds. The casket is raised on four carved feet.
Inside the casket are two silk-lined fitted trays. The bottom tray is fully lined in blue silk and has two compartments, separated along the length of the tray. The top tray is made of ivory and has a small handle at both ends. There are six lidded compartments, some of which are further divided into smaller sections. Each compartment is lined with blue silk and has a finely carved lid decorated with a floral pattern. The lid of the casket is lined with ruched blue silk.
The casket contains several items used for sewing, many of which are finely carved ivory. |
